Homewood Commons

A self sustaining system temporal in its nature providing for the community with the changing times.

Challenge

The project aimed to revitalize the homewood community, a neighbourhood present in pittsburgh, PA. The neighbourhood has overtime deterioiated with many leaving the area. Coming from a social, infrustructural and engagement approach, our team aimed not only to rejuvinate the living conditions but also to strengthen communal activity.

Our target area for this project addressed the strip of abandoned row housing units, unusable vacant plots of land and food apartheid. We aimed to revitalize the space through adaptive re-use and use the vacant lots to make greenhouses, for tackling food apartheid.

The project was split into groups of two.

  1. Revitalization of row houses through adaptive reuse. (Elise and Tracy)
  2. Providing a self sustaining system for growth and production of food for the community via utilizing the vacant plots of land. The space would act as a communal driver where residents not only connect with one another for communal activites but also experience process of production simultaneously. (Tabeer and Favour)
